According to a recent M:Metrics study, mobile social media are in heavier use in Britain than anywhere else, with “10.1 percent of Britons, 7.2 percent of Germans, 6.5 percent of French and 6.7 percent of Americans reporting they uploaded photos or videos to the Web, used chat or used dating applications in the month of April”.
This could be indicative of the viability of social networking apps in the mobile space. However, the statistics only look at one-time usage, which could be indicative of very little. It would seem to me that repeat use would be the objective, in which case, your app had better be a sticky one.
