There was a press release posted to eMediawire last week that deserves more interest than it has received so far, at least among folks who follow intellectual property law or the many flavours of free culture on offer. Drmfree.org bills itself as a public service website facilitating access to legal DRM-free downloads. The site is essentially a meta-directory of music available for legal purchase and download from a number of distributors and labels that sell digital music without DRM restrictions – including Magnatune, Audio Lunchbox, GarageBand.com, and many others.

I’m particularly pleased to see that 4AD and Smithsonian Global Sound have included themselves in the index. Here’s hoping Nonesuch is not far behind.
